The Green in Me
Today’s post is not about ‘green livin’… eco-friendly stuff and things. I kinda dig all that and have been gradually incorporating that way of living over the last few years or so for me and the Moore4. Well, as much as I can and as much as the $budget$ will allow. Unfortunately, I now have a new shade of green to add.
I had my annual check up with the eye doctor this last week and I mentioned about a new ‘floater’ I had. Only this floater wasn’t the stringy, gray looking things I’ve had for years. This one is gray, but circle-shaped. He checked the computer copy-picture of my eye; taken from some giant fancy machine that I had to sit in a chair and literally smoosh my face/eye into so that it could take a picture of my eye. The technician said only 12 doctors in Utah have this machine. I was happy he was one of them.
Dr. Fellows found a ‘freckle’ on my retina. That’s what he called it. He asked if I had macular degeneration in my family. I talked to him about my mom with her cataracts and some sort of surgery she had on her eye to alleviate a blind spot. I couldn’t look at the computer screen as he was looking at the innards of my eye. That kind of thing makes me a little weak in the knees.
So, he talked of prevention of macular degeneration via vitamins enriched with Lutein and Zeaxanthin as well as eating dark colors: spinach, broccoli.
If my blood pressure wasn’t enough of a scare to be eating better, this certainly is 10 times over. I had a spinach/romain lettuce/ broccoli salad with extra things like carrots, strawberry’s, mandarin organces and roasted almonds on top for lunch today. And included a smaller version with dinner.
I just hope I can keep all these greens goin’ in the ol’ pie hole since a person can get sick of eating salads so often. But it will be dang worth it, if I can reverse any signs of macular degeneration. I don’t think I was diagnosed, per say, with it now, but I think it is a possibility in the future (?) I am going back on Friday to get my contacts decided on and ordered, so maybe I can ask him more questions.
So, I embark at almost the age of 38.5 years to eat my eye and heart happy servings of fruits and veggies and kick old eating habits goodbye. I need to anyway for my blood pressure. As well as add to my pill regime with my new vitamins.
I’m pretty scared and stressed out of my mind about now. How in the heck did I get in such bad shape yet being so young?
Poor little eye….I guess we all need a little push to eat our greens, I know I do. Good luck!
on May 18th, 2009 at 1:53 pmI heard on a cooking show that potassium is really important for someone w high blood pressure. And that you should try to serve beans 4 times a week.
If you find any new recipes for healthy living, send them my way.
I hope all goes well :o)
