She’s Got Two More Holes In Her Head

I piled two little bodies in the car yesterday afternoon and we set off for Salt Lake. We hopped on Legacy highway instead of I-15. It’s a nice little road with speeds made for cruising and no sharing of space with the dozens of big rigs. The weather was slightly “Springy” and the girls shed their jackets within minutes. they had backpacks full of goodies as we anticipated being out for a while.

We got off the freeway and fought the busy downtown traffic to get to the Gateway Mall. Cali’s excitement began to build as we pulled into the parking garage and searched for a spot. A few minutes later and we found ourselves walking on the front door of Merle Norman Cosmetics.

Huh? Cali is only six…why would she be getting a makeover? Nope, we were there for one thing—earrings for my precious princess. I can’t believe she is wanting holes in her ears already…she is growing up so fast! I was gearing up for a painful experience. Cali has been asking for earrings for the last few months after becoming friends with a girl in the neighborhood whose ears are pierced. She has been so excited for this day to come and has been wearing stickers on her ears every day.

The woman doing the job showed Cali the options for her first pair; there weren’t many left as they had seven other piercings that day. She had the choice between gold ball ones and little green emeralds. Cali chose the emeralds. We cleaned her ears off with alcohol wipes and the woman proceeded to load up the gun and shoot a couple of studs into Cali’s little lobes.

What really surprised me was that she didn’t even flinch! Actually, it was kinda funny because as we walked out of the store (a mere two minutes after we walked in), Cali looked at me with a worried look on her face and asked, “Daddy, when do I get my earrings?”

“In four to six weeks,” I replied. She looked a little disappointed and said, “I thought I was getting them today.”

“Look in the window over there,” I said to her. She walked over to the store window and turned to me with a big grin on her face. She thought that she had only gotten holes in her ears…she didn’t realize that they put the earrings in, too. The piercing system is a sterile cartridge with the stud and needle all enclosed. Cali never even saw the studs before they went in, hence the confusion. Once she realized that she head her precious emeralds, her mood brightened and she started flying!

All in all it was a good day. We wish Mommy could have been there, but she was home recovering from a bad flu the day before. Good job, Cali!!! We love you!
